Things to do in the garden during lockdown day 32: hoe the weeds

Take advantage of the dry weather and hoe out the weeds whilst they are small.

Hoeing when it is dry cuts through the roots of annuals and kills them, or they dry out on the soil surface. However, when it is wet the weeds can just get dislodged, survive in the wet conditions and go on to reroot elsewhere.

Hoeing when it is dry

Planting veg wide enough to fit a hoe in between is key! Then weeding for the rest of the season is easy. I find it rather therapeutic. It only works on annuals though, perennials, particularly those with strong tap roots are persistent enough to reemerge even if the hoe has cut through the roots, so these need to be tackled with a hand fork.
