Things to do in the garden during lockdown day 41: use the light

Light can be used to get the maximum out of a garden design planting scheme even in shady spots.

Right plant, right place is important when it comes to light levels. Sun loving plants don't do well in the shade and visa-versa. However light can be used to pick out leaves or the structure of a plant to great effect.

Symphoricarpus albus
Cotinus coggyria

This snowberry, Symphoricarpus albus is in a really shade spot, but in the summer months the high sun filters through the top of hedge behind and lights up the leaves, giving a lime-green translucent appearance. A similar effect occurs on the young smoke bush, Cotinus coggyria leaves.
