Things to do in the garden during lockdown day 72: dig out the creepers

Creeping weeds that have snuck up behind you will be flowering by now, and will need digging out big time.

Creeping buttercup (Ranunculus repens)

Creeping cinquefoil and buttercup, Potentilla reptans and Ranunculus repens are weeds which spread by sending out rather innocuous side roots. And, they are really good at it. They are easy to dig up when small, but the cinquefoil in particular puts down a serious tap root for every plantlet and all of it will need taking out, or it will just keep on growing. Don't be fooled by thinking you have wild strawberries appearing in your borders, their leaves are similar, but the ranunculus is a very prolific weed.

Both these plants have lovely little buttercup-like flowers, but the cinquefoil is in fact a member of the Rosaceae family.

Thank you Anna Watson for the cinquefoil photos.
