Things to do in the garden during lockdown day 73: net the red currants.

Birds will strip the red currants from their pendulous stems if given half a chance, net now before they sneak in and beat you to the harvest.

Red currants are apparently irresistible to birds, they are way higher up on the menu than the raspberries and blackcurrants. I net the red currants when all the flowers have been pollinated and the berries are well formed. I have left it too late in the past and they have literally been stripped bare early one morning. The important thing is to make sure there is absolutely no way a bird can sneak in and get trapped.

My redcurrant bush has a mega blister aphid infestation. It looks terrible, but doesn't really affect the yield so I live with it.
