Things to do in the garden during lockdown day 88: enjoy the garden of someone you love

Being able to pod with someone we love has the extra bonus of being able to share their garden, or go to a green space together and enjoy the plants there.

I have zipped off to pod with my mother this weekend. She manages to keep her garden ‘under control’ at 87 with help from her wonderful gardener Martin who is in his ‘70s.

This is the ‘secret‘ entrance to the box bush that I used to climb as a child, looking far better than it ever did in the ‘70s.

The fuchsia is thriving in a small gap in the patio slabs and the miniature ornamental rose my mum planted randomly in a bed last year is hardier than it looks, and blooming for Britain.

It can not be underestimated how much gardens have kept many people going during lockdown, particularly if they have been shielding on their own like my mother. It is a clear indicator of the social and therapeutic benefits of gardens and green space.
