Things to do in the garden during lockdown day 95: hunt for chicken of the woods

Hot and humid weather is fab for fungus like chicken of the woods.

Gardens are not just about plants, fungus will inevitably pop up on trees and rotting wood and it all plays an important role in the ecosystem. This chicken of the woods has grown up substantially over the past week. Apparently it is supposed to taste like chicken, though perhaps chickens taste like the shrooms, I don't eat meat so I have no idea. Chicken of the woods is best not eaten if it is grown on yew, as it is a saprophyte and absorbs the toxic alkaloids from the tree. This isn't on yew, but I have left it anyway as its colours are so beautiful and I love the way is has flaked from underneath like shredded paper.
